Location: 63 Camelot Drive, Plymouth MA, “County Woodlot” off Long Pond Road

1.png
  • Owner:  Plymouth County, Plymouth County Commissioners

  • Volume of Earth Removed: 445,964 Cubic Yards estimated; permit claimed 250,000 cubic yards

  • Permit: Yes, issued by the Plymouth Zoning Board of Appeals to Kingston Trucking, Inc. Local residents brought a lawsuit to try to stop the mining operation. Read more in the 2018 press release here.  The Town of Plymouth sided with Kingstown Trucking and the mining operator and defeated the lawsuit, fighting against its own residents who wanted to protect the County Woodlot, forests, fields, wildlife and the Sole Source Aquifer.

  • In 1995 the ZBA gave the same landowner a permit to put in a cranberry bog on the adjacent land that is now a solar project. This was a bait and switch with the complicity of Town officials. From 1995 to 2016, Kingstown Trucking’s owner, Brad Cushing and his company, Plymouth Sand and Gravel, mined millions of cubic yards of material off Lot 19E. He was supposed to build a cranberry bog – that is what the Town permitted.  Mr. Cushing never built the bog.  Instead, once the site was mined, he put up an industrial solar farm, in partnership with the so-called green energy company, Blue Wave Development.  This industrial solar facility is prohibited on this property because it is still zoned rural residential, just like it was in 1995.

  • Area Impacted: 7 acres

  • Claimed Reason for Mining: Solar development. Solar never built, the location is now a hole in the ground.

  • Water Supply: Unknown

  • Wetlands and Waterways: Unknown; changed topography by leveling one of the area’s highest hills and mining below grade at least 25 feet.

  • Archaeological Impacts: Unknown

  • Environmental Justice Population: Yes

  • Ecosystem: The site was pristine Pine Barrens forest. Read more here.
